Netscape came along and slapped Bill Gates, causing Microsoft to counter-punch Netscape into obsolescence with a free browser in the form of Internet Explorer. Back in the 90s, Microsoft was focused on AOL, consequently creating MSN to combat what was then thought to be the biggest threat to Microsoft’s dominance. The browser wars were defined back in the day when Microsoft was the underdog.
